Aetna Medicare Advantage health maintenance organization (HMO) plans can help you get the personalized health care you need at the right time.

With Aetna Medicare Advantage HMO plans, you can enjoy the benefits of Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) and some additional benefits, such as prescription drug coverage, all in one single plan.

Do Aetna Medicare HMO plans require a referral?

Most – but not all – Aetna Medicare Advantage HMO plans require you to select a primary care provider (PCP) from a nationwide network of health care professionals.

Your PCP helps coordinate most of your medical care. If more specialized treatment is necessary, your primary care provider will give you a referral to visit a specialist or hospital in the Aetna plan network.

In some limited instances – such as in an emergency – you may be able to receive out-of-network care. However, you are typically required to visit a provider in the network. The plan may also include in-network coverage when you travel in the U.S.

What Medicare Advantage HMO plans does Aetna offer?

Aetna offers a variety of Medicare Advantage plans, including several types of HMO plans.

Aetna Medicare℠ Plan (HMO)

Provides coverage with a nationwide network of medical providers and facilities.
In-network coverage available when you travel in the US.
Allows out-of-network visits for emergency situations, renal dialysis or urgent care.

Aetna Medicare Open Access Plan (HMO)

Provides coverage with a nationwide network of medical providers and facilities.
No referrals required to see a network specialist.
In-network coverage available when you travel in the U.S.
Allows out-of-network visits for emergency situations, renal dialysis or urgent care.

Aetna Medicare Prime Plan (HMO)

Provides coverage with a nationwide network of medical providers and facilities.
Allows out-of-network visits for emergency situations, renal dialysis or urgent care.

Aetna Medicare Plan (HMO-POS)

Provides coverage with a nationwide network of medical providers and facilities.
More flexibility to visit out-of-network providers and medical facilities, though seeing out-of-network providers generally costs more.

What do Aetna Medicare Advantage HMO plans cover?

Aetna Medicare Advantage HMO plans offer additional benefits that aren’t covered by Original Medicare.

Aetna Medicare is an HMO, PPO plan with a Medicare contract. Our DSNPs also have contracts with State Medicaid programs. Enrollment in our plans depends on contract renewal.

Plan features and availability may vary by service area.

For mail-order, you can get prescription drugs shipped to your home through the network mail-order delivery program. Typically, mail-order drugs arrive within 10 days. You can call 1-866-235-5660, TTY: 711, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if you do not receive your mail-order drugs within this timeframe. Members may have the option to sign-up for automated mail-order delivery.

To send a complaint to Aetna, call the Plan or the number on your member ID card. To send a complaint to Medicare, call 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY users should call 1- 877-486-2048), 24 hours a day/7 days a week. If your complaint involves a broker or agent, be sure to include the name of the person when filing your grievance.

Participating health care providers are independent contractors and are neither agents nor employees of Aetna. The availability of any particular provider cannot be guaranteed, and provider network composition is subject to change.

Out-of-network/non-contracted providers are under no obligation to treat plan members, except in emergency situations. Please call our customer service number or see your Evidence of Coverage for more information, including the cost-sharing that applies to out-of-network services.

Not all plans offer all of these benefits. Availability of benefits and plans varies by carrier and location. Deductibles, copays, coinsurance, limitations and exclusions may apply.
